Trauma Touch Therapy™ was developed in the early 1990's by Chris Smith, CMT, TTT™, Director of Education of the Colorado School of Healing Arts. Ms. Smith was an abuse survivor, a practitioner and instructor of massage therapy. Chris trained in Hakomi Integrative Somatics and went on to co-develop Trauma Touch Therapy. This new methodology integrates principles of bodywork and psychoanalysis to release trauma from the tissues without re-traumatizing the client.
Chris developed Trauma Touch Therapy on the heels of pioneers in the work of trauma treatment and somatic experiencing. The work began with Dr. Peter Levine in late 1950’s. Bessel Van Der Kolk continued, with his research on in the impact of trauma in development. and Dr. Pat Ogden is a pioneer in somatic psychotherapy and the treatment of trauma.
Trauma Touch Therapy is a body based adjunct to psychotherapy, or a means for those who wish to be more in touch with their physical being, to work through body held trauma.
Designed to meet the needs of clients with trauma or abuse histories, this innovative work enables the client to discover the gift within the wound. It's a simple approach for working with people who have forgotten what it means to be in the here and now, people who have forgotten what it feels like to "feel."
Focused on empowering the client, the technique combines therapeutic movement and breath work with psychotherapeutic elements to bring the body and mind together in a holistic healing. The client to experiences their body and all the feelings, emotions and sensations that come with that, all the while staying present with the experience. The client experiences their life in their bodies.
The work is led by the needs of the client, actually asking them to think through their own somatic (body sensing) needs. Where is the pain? Where is the tension? What does it feel like? Is it okay to touch? Trauma Touch Therapy is a process of integration weaving itself through the course of 10 sessions with the client typically clothed. Work can be done on a massage table, in a chair or position most comfortable for the client.
Everyone has experienced some type of trauma in their lives. Trauma Touch Therapy is an important tool for anyone who has felt stress of past events within their bodies. It is useful for victims of abuse, violent crime, surgery trauma, PTSD, witnesses to violent acts etc. Trauma can be a one-time event that we perceive as life threatening, such as a car accident, surgery, fall, choking episode or a physical attack. It can also result from exposure to a natural disaster, war or terrorism. Trauma can be developmental, for example when an event such as abuse, abandonment or neglect interrupts the normal developmental stages of a child.
Through a series of ten, 90 minute sessions, the client integrates breath work, visualization of sensations within the body, movement, creativity and play to recognize and release trauma held within the body tissues. Further empowerment of the clients continues as he/she takes the work into their daily life and is able to free themselves from cycles of trauma.
