deep tissue massage

deep tissue massage

Deep Tissue Massage is a name covering massage techniques that focus on the deeper layers of the soft tissues. The purpose is to lengthen and "unstick" the membrane (fascia) covering the muscle and then treat areas of hyper-irritability, relieving pain trapped in the muscle. It is both corrective and therapeutic.

History

Janet G. Travell, MD, a pioneer in the development of myofascial pain treatment, was President John F. Kennedy's personal White House physician. She relieved his severe and chronic back pain. In 1969 John Barnes further developed Myofascial Release Therapy.

What is Myofascial Therapy?

Myofascial Therapy (Myo) melts adhesions and restrictions that occur in the fascia (skin that surrounds the muscles).

What does a session look like?

The massage stroke is slow and allows the client's body to adapt at its own rate. Once the fascia is restored to normal length, the muscle tissue can re-establish its natural tone and flexibility. Myo can be used in conjunction with other deep tissue and relaxation modalities, creating a customized session.

History

Neuromuscular Technique (NMT) was first developed as a method of tissue manipulation, in the 1930’s by Stanley Lief. Work by Raymond Nimmo, Janet Travell and David Simons studied the palpable knots or taut bands of muscle fibers, and developed the theory of trigger points, which could be relieved by by the application of pressure of the therapists thumb tip.

What is Neuromuscular Technique?

Points of irritability are stretched to loosen the fascia (membrane that surrounds the muscle). Then direct pressure is focused at that location, thereby giving instant relief to areas of chronic pain.

What does a session look like?

The therapist begins my loosening the tissue with Myofascial release, then warms the area, applying localized pressure to the trigger point and follows through with gentle massage. NMT can be used in conjunction with other deep tissue and relaxation modalities, creating a customized session.
